Claude Oscar Monet was born on November 14, 1840.  He moved to La Havre in 1845.  In 1858, he was encouraged to paint outside by Eugène Boudin, and because of this encouragement, he later became the leader of the Impressionist movement.  When his son was a year old he tried to commit suicide.  Luckily, it was unsuccessful because in 1869 he was painting with Renior, another famous French impressionist.  His lover, Camille Doncieux, helped him with his paintings by posing occasionally and married him in 1870.  He had several years of success in painting including what would become his greatest work Impression: Sunrise.  Then in 1879, Camille died.  Monet moved to Giverny, France where his famous gardens still exist.  He stayed there with his new wife Alice Hoschedé and family.  Monet passed away on December 5, 1926 after 43 years of painting in his gardens, leaving a new way to paint and hundreds of works behind.
